Annamaya Kosha – The Energy System of Ayurveda and Yoga

Body is the physical, and material sheath of our existence. It is a complex system that consists of multiple layers. In Depth understanding of this enables us to stay energetic and stress-free. Annamaya  is one of these layers or koshas, of the physical self. Its name comes from the fact that food nourshies it. For better understanding of the constitution of our body, it’s also great to understand what koshas are. Koshas are a series of energetic sheaths that are similar to energy bodies. This encases the physical human form and regulates the health, consciousness, awareness and many other things about the energy systems in our body, according to ayurvedic and yogic philosophy. There are 5 koshas, which are the: Annamaya, Pranamaya, Manomaya, Vijinanamaya, and Anandamaya. However, for today, let me discuss with you what is annamaya Kosha.

Annamaya Kosha – One of the Five

Annamaya Kosha is the first and outer of the five Koshas (sheaths). In Sanskrit, it means the sheath of food. It is the sheath of the physical self as food empowers it. Through this sheath or layer, we identify ourselves as a mass which consists of the skin, flesh, fat, bones and filth. This is the most condensed form of energy as it relates to our physical body.  Anna means food because this consist of the food that we take in. It is something that we can see, touch and feel. The annamaya plays a crucial role for humanity as this is the physical aspect of life. This is the first port of entry for us to have access to the deeper layer of the energy systems in our body.

Hence, we need to take good care of this sheath by keeping it healthy, clean, and free from toxins or impurities. Proper diet, exercise, and relaxation on a regular basis help us to keep our bodies healthy. We also use asanas to bring flexibility, toning, strength, balance, relief, relaxation, and fitness to its physical sheath. Though what we do at this level of annamaya kosha, also affect the other Koshas as well. When we reach the deeper layers or sheaths, we can eventually reach our very core which is the Atman or our universal self. Being aware of our physical body helps us in deeply connecting with the other four koshas.
